Places to Visit
Beaches
Florida has nearly 1,200 miles and over half of that is beautiful beaches. Both the Atlantic and Gulf coasts are within an hour and a half’s reach from Central Florida. We are particular fans of Venice beach where you can hunt for ancient sharks teeth on the shore, and watch or even join in while the locals catch fish from the pier.
State Parks
Perhaps these are under-publicised to tourists heading to Florida for theme parks, but when you have seen enough palm trees and St Augustine’s grass – head off to a state park and connect with natural Florida. It really is stunning, and to be able to swim in clean, fresh water (72 degrees coming straight out of the Florida Aquifer) is just a real treat after splashing around in chlorine pools with other tourists. Because the state parks are so well maintained there is also the possibility, in fact make that probability, of seeing a vast array of flora and fauna, bobbing down rivers alongside local garfish and turtles – drifting past blue herons fishing for their lunch. It simply cannot be beaten – however good the theme park!
Kennedy Space Center
The Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral is a chance to get really close to a real space shuttle that has flown into space, meet real astronauts – or take playing Angry Birds to a whole new level with the Angry Birds Space Encounter. Just an hour from Orlando along the Beachline Expressway, it could not be easier to incorporate this attraction into your holiday.
History
Take a road trip up to the ancient city of St Augustine, the oldest continually inhabited city in Florida and in fact in the whole USA. Here you will find cobblestone streets, cafes and inns and even 43 miles of beaches!
Central Florida – has so much going on that it has its very own page!
