Compact Car Hire
Compact cars are one size up from the smallest category – the economy car. The compact category can seat 5, although it would be a bit of a squeeze if you were intending to do much touring around. Whilst in Florida in April 2013 we went to see the Alamo fleet at Orlando International Airport to see what makes and models are included within this category and to take a snapshot or two of the boot space, which we hope will help you visualise the room available for your luggage.
Alamo operates a system called ‘Alamo Choice‘ at most major location, whereby you can choose your car from the line up in the garage – so the fleet available on any day ebbs and flows as the hours pass, but on the day we visited, these are the makes and models we saw lined up for customers:
- Nissan Versa
- Susuki SX 4
- Toyota Corolla
- Chevrolet Sonic
- Kia Soul
- Hyundai Accent
- Toyota Yaris
- Mazda 3
- Hyundai Elantra
- Ford Focus
These were the cars within the Alamo fleet, but it is probably a good illustration of what is available with other companies as well. It is important to remember that even with Alamo’s Choice, no make or model can ever be guaranteed with any supplier. When booking car hire you are booking a category rather than a specific car – this makes for the most boring of mantras but is true nonetheless!
The compact would make a good choice for a couple, or perhaps a family with a young child. If you have more than this in your party, or are intending on making a road trip across America then it might be better to pay a little extra for a mid-size (Intermediate Category).
